The controversial Queen Marie Antoinette and her exquisite taste for fashion and jewellery gave rise to the “necklace scandal”, in which the French queen of Austrian origin was awarded the order for the most expensive necklace of all time, apparently the excuse that would begin the violent dismantling of the old French and European feudal system.

All France was as convinced that Queen Marie Antoinette had bought the most expensive jewel in Europe as that she had said that if the people had no bread, they might as well eat cakes.
