The Pearls of Mallorca
When people talk about “ Mallorca pearls ” you might assume they are referring to the handcrafted pearls that are created on the island of Mallorca . Majorica is one of the most recognisable brands as we have been producing them since 1890 when the manufacturing process was initially invented.
Majorica pearls: a brief history
For many centuries, pearls were associated with wealth and nobility and only those of higher socioeconomic status could wear them. They were only accessible to the extremely wealthy, as natural pearls formed inside an oyster or mollusk are very rare, making them very expensive.
This led to a demand for cheaper imitations, and in the 17th century, a rosary maker in Paris used fish scales to coat glass beads to replicate an iridescent sheen similar to real pearls. While this was a decent substitute, many people still couldn't afford pearls, creating a clear gap in the market.
This was recognized by German inventor Eduard Heusch, a German innovator, who wanted to make pearls more affordable . He obtained the first patent for creating pearls and founded the company Societé des perles de Indes E. Heusch & Co , which is known today as Majorica.
What is the manufacturing process?
At Majorica, we like to keep a bit of mystery . We believe that some secrets should be kept, including the exact details of our formula and how we make our unique pearls. However, we also love sharing our story with our customers , so we are happy to reveal an overview of our manufacturing process.
First, a tiny core of opaline (opaque or colored glass) is covered with layers of a protective substance . This is achieved by completely immersing it in a pearlescent liquid consisting of ground fish scales or other marine animal particles. It is this step that gives the pearl the iridescence for which it is famous.
This specialized coating process is repeated between 30 and 40 times. After each coating, the pearls are dried and polished . This helps to remove any imperfections.
After this, a final coating is applied. It is important to ensure that the pearls receive maximum protection to prevent deterioration , so the pearls are subjected to UV radiation, gases and other solutions that prevent fading and make them resistant. This step gives pearls their longevity, if properly cared for it means they can last for decades.
What are Mallorcan pearls famous for?
Mallorcan pearls are famous for their striking beauty and their surprising resemblance to natural pearls, so much so that, to the untrained eye, they can even be mistaken for sea pearls!
Although there are many imitation pearls on the market, few capture the essence of natural pearls like those made in Mallorca do . This is due to the history that the place shares with pearls and the extensive experience it has in pearl production.
Why choose Perlas de Mallorca?
Aside from their aesthetic qualities, Mallorca pearls are popular because they are less expensive than natural pearls. They are available at a more affordable price, making them accessible to a wider audience and a better choice for many people.
They are also a more durable alternative to real pearls due to the treatment process they undergo. This makes them more robust than natural pearls, as they are resistant to perspiration, heat, makeup and perfume, making them a much more practical alternative.
The pearls of Mallorca They can also be considered more sustainable . Oyster pearls are valuable due to their rarity, but not all oysters or mollusks produce natural pearls, leading to many oysters being wasted in the search for rare pearls. Therefore, Mallorca pearls are a more environmentally friendly option , as they effectively emulate the appearance of the real thing without wasting resources.
Pearls made in Mallorca are also intrinsically imbued with the history of our island. This makes them a popular choice among people who want a unique piece of jewellery that feels and looks authentic.
