Where does the Black Friday tradition come from?
The name dates back to 1869, referring to an event that was far less fun than the pre-Christmas shopping we now associate the name with. On September 24, 1869, there was a devastating financial crisis in the US due to the crash of the US gold market.
It was all down to two greedy financiers named Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, who collaborated in buying up as much of the country's gold as possible, digging deep into their alarmingly large pockets to drive up the cost of gold so much that they could sell it for unheard-of profits.
It shook the entire nation and the US stock market plummeted, sending everyone from high-earning CEOs to humble farmers into bankruptcy. Naturally, this was a very dark day in American history, hence its adopted name of Black Friday.
It wasn't until the 1950s that the name became relevant to the shopping industry. It was first used in this context by the Philadelphia police, who used the term to describe the chaos of the day after Thanksgiving, with large crowds of people gathering in the city center to do their shopping.
Initially, the name gained a negative reputation, due to the negative implications of this rush of shoppers, one of which was the unfortunate increase in shoplifting. Many stores decided to capitalize on the occasion, holding annual sales on the last Friday of November, deterring shoplifters and generating unprecedented revenues that made Black Friday a period of financial growth, rather than the loss it had been in 1869.
